From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Twisted sentence structure, tongue twisters, forced rhyme scheme, and lack of a consistent cadence make this offering a difficult read-aloud. "See this wonderful boat bobbing here on the water?/It's my Super-Stupendous Shipshape Shark Spotter" is one of the better-scanning lines, but still is a clunky read. Written at an almost fourth-grade reading level and illustrated in a cartoon style, the book's intended audience is unclear. Older students would be better served by reading a nonfiction text about sharks, many of which are listed in the back matter, including David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes's Face to Face With Sharks (National Geographic, 2009). Readers should skip right to these additional resources. Buy only where the TV show is popular.-Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GAα(c) Copyright 2013. What idiot chose to put pictures of dead sharks and dismembered shark fins in a book for kids who like sharks?
Rhyming is terrible, very feeble attempt at copying Suess’ writing style and fails horribly. Reading it to my 4 year old, often would make up rhymes that fit better. Further, the book is long in the tooth about things that kids just won’t understands. A section on skin grafts? Are you serious? Then the whole enviro-radical message at the end with dead shark pictures, hacked up fins and shark soup (how do you make that rhyme). Try explaining dead sharks hanging on hooks to a 4 year old. Totally unnecessary. I give it 2 stars as there is some valuable info about different sharks but this is NOT Suess.
Great book as always! Side note: I love how this book doesn’t sugar coat what is really happening to the sharks and our current ecosystem. Kids (and adults) need to know the true story and this book simply puts it out there! Save our oceans! Stop shark fin soup. So Dumb...I can’t stand what is happening to the sharks and all species of the sea. I could go on and on. But this book really is a great informative read.
What an Excellent Read! This book has so much information about sharks, yet it is within keeping of the other Cat in the Hat books. I even learned things I didn't know. This book was the 2017 Book of the Year and I stumbled on the article and purchased it on Amazon. My nephew loves his "Hark the Shark" book and my brother has to read it over and over every evening.
What an amazing and in depth look at all the different kinds of sharks, as well as the features they all have in common. While this is written in the fun style of Dr. Seuss, it is much more informative and educational. This book will be enjoyed for years in our home.
Awesome! Informative and in a super fun way. Both my 6 year old and almost 4 year old love it! No hesitation. Just buy it. But it is a bit longer than you might expect. Start earlier at bedtime than later!
As a teacher and a mom, I love this book! it has a good message about sharks and has many educational facts in the traditional rhyming style known to be used in the Cat in the Hat series. I also bought the Baby Aspen Four-Piece Gift Set (shark towel, slippers and bath puppet) with this book!
My 5 year old is really interested in sharks and LOVES this book. It's informative, fun and a quick read. I was impressed that it covered many species of sharks (great white, hammerhead, nurse, shyshark, mako, wobbegong and more!). It also has a section about how sharks are born and how to think about making choices to save them from extinction. We've had this book for 2 months and my son asks that we read it every night. This is a must for any kid interested in sharks!
