Review
"It provides a detailed review of a wide variety of areas related to this compound, from historical use, pharmacological actions of this substance, the scientific evidence supporting its medicinal properties, as well as the political and legal issues around its medical and recreational uses.Overall this is an excellent reference for a wide variety of individuals that would be a welcome addition to most libraries." --Doody's Notes February 2015"The Handbook of Cannabis is clearly a labour of love. Prof. Pertwee is an international leading light in the study of cannabis and cannabinoids. He has recruited an extended list of contributors and sub-editors, who have managed a Herculean task of summarising the wealth and breadth ofknowledge on cannabis and cannabinoids. This handbook will be a fantastic reference book for both researchers and those outside the area to obtain an authoritative summary on that topic. This book is a masterpiece! The contributions Roger Pertwee has made (namely his research on experimentalmultiple sclerosis and cannabinoids) are incredibly noteworthy. The Handbook of Cannabis contains contributions from many important international researchers, and I am delighted to commend the handbook, which will no doubt be a landmark in the field."

In a word...spotty. This is no unifying message but instead, 40 mostly unconnected chapters that will be a rarely-used shelf reference. There is only one editor and I don't think anyone edited anything, even for grammar. It does not seem peer-reviewed in any way either. Perhaps my bias is because I am an American MD living in a medical cannabis state reading a book mostly written by European prohibitionists. The best parts include chapters by Drs. Russo and McPartland, the horticulturalists at GW Pharmaceutical, and American scholar, Amanda Reiman. The dubious content is offered by the usual suspects from the National Institute on Drug Abuse who routinely provide an academic buzzkill to honest scholars. As one might guess, Handbook of Cannabis (Handbooks in Psychopharmacology) seems a very censored book with an Imprimatur by NIDA and GW Pharmaceuticals. In 2016, what they leave out is more laughable than what they print. On the other hand for non-political information such as drug kinetics and endocannabinoid receptor physiology, this book is a time-saving reference for the bookshelf. And, it is useful for collating animal research up to 2014, the date of publication. For North American cannabis scholars in 2016, I suggest one's time is better spent using Google (and Google Scholar) to find articles by Dr. Russo and thoroughly learn the endocannabinoid system, less common cannabinoids, and finally the terpenoid and other components of Cannabis. Then go to projectcbd.org to learn more about CBD and gain more references. Then buy a copy of Cannabis Pharmacy: The Practical Guide to Medical Marijuana and while the last two chapters are optional, Backes's Youtube talks around 1 hour each from Seattle and Malibu are quite good...and less confusing. He also had good references. Then pick up a copy of The Cannabis Manifesto: A New Paradigm for Wellness to tie it all together. DeAngelo's part on cannabis "misuse" is far more helpful and understandable than more reefer-madness NIDA nonsense. Happy reading!
excellent scientific review and summary
Well in depth and worth the money if you're looking for sourced information on the clinical testing of cannabis.covers a broad range of medical uses.
Excellent
Purchased as gift. They were very satisfied.
Best up-to-date comprehensive review of relevant scientific topics from authoritative sources. I concur with other reviews.
Excellent but expensive reference textbook on cannabinoid science and medicine.
I had no idea how extensive this book would be. It begins with the history of cannabis, and its use in ancient medicine up to the present day. According to this book, physicians worldwide were discovering healthy uses for cannabis, treating menstrual headaches, arthritis, back pain, and urinary burning, thanks to this inexpensive plant. The next chapters discuss the chemical composition, the laws of cannabis, international regulations,The Handbook Of Cannabis does, however, list the hazards. In all chapters, whether they discuss legal or natural issues, they go heavily into the dangers. In the chapters on international control and the chapter on dispensaries, we learn that the laws are often unclear. Firstly, the famous Netherlands marijuana cafes are not entirely legal. There are regulations on how much can be sold and to whom, and where they can open. In the USA, cities can make their own laws regarding where marijuana dispensaries or stores can open, and the cities can charge huge annual license fees to open. Another major issue is the source of the drug. Though it may be legal to sell marijuana in the Netherlands, it isn’t legal to import it, so the importation is in the hands of organized crime. In the USA, shipping marijuana from a grower state to one that legalizes the sale creates a Federal issue. If a truck carrying marijuana crosses through a state where it’s not legal, the driver could be charged with a crime. Sending it through US Mail might not be legal either, unless the Federal government comes to an agreement over “peaceable journey,†as it did for interstate transport of firearm.I recommend this book for anyone who’s considering using marijuana, treating an illness with it, or planning to go into business selling it. The book covers all the issues of US and international laws, and the benefits of cannabis. The only thing missing is the agricultural issue of cannabis. Only a small section is devoted to growing, and that has to do with horticulture. The book doesn’t go into the aspects of mass cannabis farming, so if you want to know what kind of fertilizer to use, and what kind of grow lights to use, you’ll have to look elsewhere. For anyone researching the medical, legal, and economic aspects of marijuana, this book is perfect.
