Review

Tatar's book, with its annotations, explanations, front matter and end matter, illustrations and biographical essay and further-reading section, is difficult to overpraise. A volume for parents, for scholars, for readers, it never overloads the stories or, worse, reduces them to curiosities. And as an object, it's a chocolate-box feast of multicolored inks and design.--Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Neil Gaiman, New York Times Book Review Tatar provides a very handsome volume, richly illustrated, full of wonderful facts, quotations, history, and with a very clear and extremely readable translation. Tatar's annotated Grimm is the perfect volume for someone seeking to learn more about the tales. She does not fill this volume with her own opinions and judgments; she carefully amasses information then steps back. Edward Carey, Boston Globe

It's a beautiful book with quality paper and illustrations. It's perfect for just the fairy tales. The annotation is useless, though. Annotation is supposed to give you historical context, not shaky interpretations of symbolism for pages and pages. For example, the big bad wolf falls into a well and drowns. The annotation: "The destroyer of life who devours children is returned to the waters, to the source of life. The tale, which tells of death and rebirth, has been read as an allegory of the perpetual renewal of life."It just seems like filler to me, like some student trying to fill the word quota for an essay when they got nothing. However there are some interesting details in the annotation when the writer is focused on history.

I'm happy to add this book to our collection. I ordered this after receiving 'Grimm's complete fairy tales.' The other book is beautiful and contains more stories than this one but it lacked illustrations. This versions illustrations made it worth the buy and it has some interesting insight about the tales themselves. I'm not too crazy about the layout of the book. It could have easily been condensed and there is such a waste of space on all the pages but I guess if you like to write side notes in your books than this version could be perfect for you. I was going to return the other book but after comparing some of the translations between the two and seeing how many more tales the other book had I decided to keep it. Now I can enjoy the beautiful illustrations in this book but also have the full collection of tales from the other book. The illustrations are varying, some are beautiful full page colorations. Other's are merely black and white and simply sketched (but still great) there's also small single character sketches here and there. I do wish there were more illustrations (some stories don't have any at all) but it's still a beautiful book overall.

I've always want to know the truth about some of the fairy tails I've heard as a kid. it seems that most were watered down from the original writings. i guess this was done so as to not scare the crud. Well, this book tells the whole story. A large book that contains several of the classics, like Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella, and some not so classic like The White Snake. A large, heavy and nicely illustrated in black and white sketches. The best thing about this book is that it is annotated, so you get lots of great information and links to other stories and myths. Great edition and well worth the price. Not for kids, just us big kids.

This is a beautifully put together book. It is large and gorgeous, with charming illustrations from past illustrators of this seminal work. The stories are lightly annotated which adds to the richness and the tales themselves are from the Brother's Grimm, not some hoo-ha who thinks it's necessary to pull out "the bad parts". I have read several versions of this work and this is one of the best. Get it for your children get it for yourself . . . it will transport you into an altered world that is instantly recognizable.

I've loved the Grimm Brothers since I was a very small child, and I had this book in junior high. Sadly, I lost it. So I repurchased it!! I love that it's hardcover, and I love that it has so many of their stories in it. I have a few books on them that only contain a handful of stories but this one has soooo many! And it's annotated. As someone with an English lit degree, I like to make my own analysis of a story, but I do enjoy seeing others' perspectives and comparing them to my own. Love this book!!

I've heard the annotator on NPR (Terry Gross's Fresh Air). The woman is more knowledgable on fairy tales than any of us has to be. Hence the book is a treat. We're all seeing these stories everywhere in pop culture. I've seen how they pop up in less known but still interesting works (Middleton's "Grimm's Last Fairy Tale", Anfuso's "Oz House"). Those works and this one mutually re-enforce each other. They are richer when you read these. These old tales are renewed when you read theirs. The fairy tale is not a static thing. it wasn't meant to be. i find this book gives us a sense of the living fairy/folk tradition! Oz House;Grimm's Last Fairytale: A Novel

I loved this for years, but the foreshadowing Brothers Grimm quotations at the beginning of each episode of "Grimm" on NBC got me interested again.I had been just looking up the more interesting quotes on the internet each week...but nothing beats holding a great heavy book in your lap and cuddling up with some creepy ass story that pre- Disney was meant to scare the younguns outta the woods.
