My opinion is that the book will be more beneficial in text than audio. CBT repeats a process and phrases. These are easier to reference in text. The step by step change of perception process and base phrase statement is repetitive for each malady addressed. Consequently listening to it is boring. Nothing new acquired from malady treatment to malady treatment . I presume that if you acquired this book to address one malady and read only its section it wouldn't be boring. Listening by audio it is difficult to pick out the specific sections. There are references to graphs or tables that are obvious meaningless to an audio listener. Further into the book that process becomes more compounded. I was listening as I drove, hence the reason I acquired the audio version. However the compound process was too difficult to effectively follow. I support the CBT approach and as the first book on the subject I gained valuable knowledge.

This book presents the main principles of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in a clear and accessible manner. The idea that it is your thoughts that cause you to feel angry, anxious or depressed and not the events or people that cause it, is a powerful idea. It is powerful because, if fully internalized, this means that just as much as you cause these mindsets with your thoughts, you have control over them to change them. Joseph uses the triad of challenges to irrational thoughts used by Albert Ellis, but names them slightly differently: irrational beliefs are untrue, Illogical, and unhelpful. Ellis asks the person to apply realism, logic and pragmatism. Joseph’s approach expands on the last of these three by asking the person to list what is in it for the person for both holding the rational and the irrational belief. Joseph’s book also takes a different tact than other CBT self-help books as he devotes the second half to applying CBT to goal setting. He emphasizes that when setting goals a person will naturally feel uncomfortable, but this discomfort could develop into the typical irrational beliefs – I must succeed in my goal; if I don’t I am a total failure, etc. This is a good twist on this genre as usually books on CBT are not this practical.
