If you need a new series to read, I highly recommend Heathen. Plenty of the reviews can tell you what the story is about: a badass viking woman out to free a goddess. But the themes of feminism and lgbtq are front line and center, not in a preachy way but from this coming of age story of Aydis. Her experiences deeply resonate (or at least it did for me) with the audience of the struggles of being born in a world where you are at the mercy of men. If you don't know what that feels like, you are extraordinarly lucky, however you can still enjoy the story. Beyond a strong start to the epic journey of toppling Odin himself, feelings of ostracism and wanting to right a broken system are still relevant experiences.The best part is that Aydis doesn't go out on this journey for revenge. She does it with compassion and to right an injustice. Every interaction or conflict she engages further reinforces this positive characteristic that sets her apart from other action heroines. A woman with nothing to lose is where the similarity ends.Kudos to the author for creating a story with great dialogue beats and magnificent art in a world where mediocre floods the mainstream. I greatly appreciate the beautiful energy in the painted strokes at the very beginning and rambunctious linework that fill each page with an excellent grasp of cinematography.And if you're wondering if I was doing this because of a "review" copy... No. I genuinely fell in love with the art style, bought the book, and the writing made me stay for the long haul. I can't wait for more.

So much works for Atasha Alterici's Heathen: wonderfully distinct storytelling, engaging characters, and beautiful illustrations you just want to stare at and explore. I've seen a lot of comparisons to Disney here (despite the very adult premise) and I completely agree - mix the visual style of Hercules/Frozen and then give it storylines about various types of love and you get the idea of this title.Story: Viking maiden Aydis has been exiled from her tribe after kissing a girl. With nothing to lose, she decides to free the cursed Valkyrie Brynhild from her prison of Flames. But Odin is not so easily circumvented and Aydis will soon become embroiled in the machinations of the Norse Gods.First and foremost (and not evident from any of the covers) the illustration work throughout is superb. Expressive, distinct, and possessing the impressive qualities of mixing fine art with cartoon qualities. The animals are especially fascinating - I was especially enthralled by a vignette about the wolves of Ragnarok, Hati and Skoll (sons of Fenrir). But even Aydis' wight horse Saga is particularly emotive in ways distinct to that animal. I found I was staring at the pictures just to enjoy them independent of the story.Which isn't to say that the human shaped characters weren't equally wonderful to enjoy. Most of the characters evoked similarities to the Disney style of Hercules. Which isn't to mean that this is children's fare, just that stylistically Heathen is very enticing and friendly. There's nothing gritty or harsh here as one would expect from most Viking stories these days. Instead, this is much like a fable though admittedly with very modern sensibilities. Indeed, that anachronism is perhaps the only real issue I have with Heathen: it tries a bit too hard and single mindedly in that respect. Every subplot is about women's rights or that of the LGBT world and it got a bit too narrow for me at several points.I enjoyed all of the characters and appreciated that at its heart, Heathen is about love and acceptance. The volume does end abruptly and without a complete story arc - readers will be left wanting more. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
I obtained Heathens V.1 for free through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.From my limited experiences with comics, the actual artwork is what drew me in to read Heathens. The title is a keyword that I always take an interest in, but when the artwork is shoddy or the description doesn't pull me in I usually gloss right over it. I do especially like mythology and heathenry and find the culture very interesting, so when the comic had a good story to tell and the artwork looked fantastic, I had to see what it was all about.I was not disappointed! Immediately, the rich pictures that extended out from the scenes in each box helped narrate the story as much as the dialogue. The dialogue was well-thought out and intriguing. It didn't delve in too quickly, though it was brisk and to the point. There is a casual unraveling of the threads that entangle all of the characters, most notably how the main character, Aydis does or will connect with others.The story lines intersect and are laid out carefully, showing just enough of their cards to make you want to know more. I wanted to know exactly what happened between Brynhild and one of her previous rescuers; about Freyja and her palace of love instead of war. I wanted to know, how are they all going to come together to break Brynhild's curse, masterfully crafted by Odin? How will they break Odin's oppressive rule over them? The seeds are planted in rows, making you want to follow down the garden and watch them grow into a ripe fruit.I found the retelling or rather, author's take, on the Norse culture and mythology refreshing as well. Natasha Alterici did not stick to the tropes and personifications that are too typical of writing on them and was able to infuse her own thoughts and creativity in to really get a breathing story.Without spoiling too much - the comic features heavy LGBT+ themes even in just this first volume - which I ultimately found added to the depth and breadth of the story. Few authors, writers, or entertainers in many venues dare tread too far off the beaten path so there is not as much in the way of LGBT+ literature and content available as many would like. The characters mention these aspects in relatable ways that deal with the consequences of being LGBT+ and what that means in their world for them. It mirrors common struggles of LGBT+ communities in the here and now, and as such will help anyone struggling with identity or having issues after coming out deal with what they could be facing with the solidarity a character can mirror. This was very well-thought and crafted with the sensitivity necessary in dealing with LGBT+ topics.Finally, the end of the comic includes several pages of artistry that is relevant and inclusive to what happened in the comic. The larger pictures add detail as well as anticipation for the volumes that follow and are extremely beautiful.
