According to the introduction, the first edition of this title (Linworth, 1994) concentrated on why, whereas this one focuses on how. The author is a former teacher and principal and writes from the administrator's perspective. The text reads like a research paper, better organized and planned than many written by students, but larded with footnotes. The citations are listed chapter-by-chapter. The organization of material is good, presenting first a concept and then its implications for librarians. Workbook-style pages are liberally sprinkled throughout and range from checklists to fill in the blanks. The information reads like a manual for "How to Succeed in...." Many of the ideas presented seem banal, but might present new librarians with concepts they did not encounter in library school. Experienced librarians will find the ideas a rehash of journal articles and seminars. Library advocacy efforts were just beginning to accelerate when the first edition of Building Influence for the School Librarian came out in the middle 1990s. Many librarians had not yet given a lot of thought to how they could - or even if they should - deliberately go about changing the way others perceived them, their libraries, and their library media programs. About a third of that edition was devoted to the argument that they could and should build an influence base in their schools. Now, a decade later, library advocacy and librarian influence are leading edge topics in the field. I don't think it's any longer necessary to try to convince most readers that they should consciously set about shaping other people's perceptions of them and their programs. Consequently, instead of deeply investigating why, this edition much more concentrates on how school library media specialists can use what we know about workplace influence from research and theory to improve their own situations.

This book is very helpful if you are planning on becoming a librarian. Very helpful tips are given about how to advocate for the library and how to deal with administrators. Actually, school administrators in general could benefit from this book.
Dr. Hartzell, who has never been a school librarian, may just be the biggest fan of school librarians. By writing this book from the viewpoint of a school administrator, he very carefully outlines the influence and power the school librarian has...if she chooses to claim it. He also details how the school librarian can take this influence in the school and turn in it to a powerful advocacy for school libraries. In a very nice way, he tells us what we are doing wrong(or what we may not know to do) and then he maps out what can be done to correct it. I love solutions and he gives us many. This book changed the way I thought about school libraries and what they can do for schools.
